On February 1, 2025, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) under the 2023 designation for Venezuela. TPS and related benefits associated with the 2023 designation for Venezuela will no longer be in effect starting 60 days after publication of the
termination notice in the Federal Register (April 2, 2025). This comes after the Department of Homeland Security last month announced the extension of TPS for El Salvador, Venezuela, Ukraine and Sudan for 18 months. Of note, this is separate from the
2021 TPS designation for Venezuela, which is not yet terminated, but the extension has been reversed. That TPS goes through September 10, 2025, unless extended or terminated.
The Secretary of Homeland Security may designate a foreign country for TPS due to conditions in the country that temporarily prevent the country's nationals from returning safely or, in certain circumstances, where the country is unable to handle the return of its nationals adequately. United States Citizenship and Immigration Services may grant TPS to eligible nationals of certain countries (or parts of countries) who are already in the United States. Eligible individuals without nationality who last resided in the designated country may also be granted TPS.
