Understand How the Nursing Facility Five-Star Quality Rating System Works

Programs and Resources

AhcancalED offers comprehensive training for nursing facility administrators and nurse leaders titled “The Five-Star Quality Rating System.” This education program provides an in-depth review of the methodology for the overall Five-Star Quality Rating System, including each of the three domains: health inspections, staffing, and quality measures.

In December 2008, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) updated its Nursing Home Compare public reporting site to include quality ratings for each nursing home participating in Medicare or Medicaid. These ratings are expressed as “star” ratings to reflect each nursing home’s performance. The primary goal of this rating system is to provide residents and their families with an easy-to-understand assessment of nursing home quality and to distinguish between high- and low-performing facilities.
Upon completion of this training program, learners will:
  • Gain a basic understanding of the Five-Star Quality Rating System and each of the three domains.
  • Develop a working knowledge of the methodology used to determine the overall Five-Star composite score.
  • Understand the scoring methodology for each domain, including:
    • The Health Inspection Rating
    • The Staffing Rating
    • The Quality Measure Rating
The training program costs $40 for AHCA members and $80 for non-members. It includes 1.5 NAB CEs and 1.5 contact hours through the Iowa Board of Nursing. Register here.
