Committees

Every two years AHCA members have the opportunity to nominate themselves or another member to serve on one or more of the AHCA committees. Nominations for the 2024/2025 cycle are closed.Nominations will open in the Fall of 2025 for the 2026/2027 cycle. Role of AHCA Committees

The role of the AHCA Committees is to assist the Board of Governors (BOG) and Council of States (COS) in implementing the work plan of AHCA. Committees shall function in a development and advisory capacity recommending programs and policies in major areas of AHCA interest in which they are assigned and determined by the approved work plan.

Expectations of AHCA Committees

  • Essential decision-making.
  • Define the problem.
  • Define the data.
  • Describe the alternative actions.
  • Make recommendations to the BOG and COS via resolutions or blue sheets. Complex problems should generate "white papers" to accompany blue sheets.

Role of the Committee Chairs

  • Set the meeting dates.
  • Attend meetings.
  • Accept the objectives as outlined in the work plan.
  • Assist in the development of the agenda for each meeting.
  • Exercise leadership by stimulating thinking and committee member participation.
  • Monitor participation and include all committee members in the deliberation and discussions.
  • Keep discussions on track by continually restating the issue under consideration.
  • Clarify issues by obtaining consensus.
  • Evaluate and communicate the committee's progress and accomplishments.
  • Tie the committee's work to the overall work plan of AHCA.
  • Close the meeting by summarizing the progress and decisions.
  • Communicate directly with other committee chairs having any overlap in the topic being studied.
  • Provide subject expertise to the BOG and COS as necessary.
  • Set timelines for committee work on objectives.

Role of the Committee Members

  • Attend meetings.
  • Study the agenda and relevant materials prior to the meeting date.
  • Decide in advance how and what to contribute to the meeting based on the materials.
  • Stay focused on the agenda and bring up new business at the appropriate time.
  • Deliver remarks that are brief and focused on the issue at hand.
  • Maximize the decision-making ability of the group by participating actively.

Role of Staff

  • Provide staff support.
  • Communicate with the committee chair directly on issues related to the work of the committee.
  • Assemble meeting packets and preparatory materials.
  • Organize and schedule meetings.
  • Prepare minutes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Scheduling of Meetings

There is no specific requirement as to the number of meetings/conference calls that each committee is allowed to have, however, practical judgment should be used. The workload of each committee should drive the number of meetings being held. Further, if a meeting can be conducted via conference call the Chair should elect to do so. In-person meetings should be held in the most cost-efficient location. The staff person assigned to your committee will assist you with setting up an in-person meeting or a conference call.

AHCA Facility Member Nominations:

All AHCA members are encouraged to participate in this process.  In an effort to create diverse and widespread representation, appointments to specific committees may be limited to one participant per state and company.  To assist in the process, individuals should be nominated for up to three committees and rank their selections in order of preference.  To submit your nominations, please complete the Survey.

State Affiliate Executives and Staff:

The leadership of the Affiliated State Health Care Association Executives (ASHCAE), representing the state executives from AHCA’s 49 state affiliates and the District of Columbia, appoint state executives and state affiliate staff to the AHCA committees.  

Non-Provider Members/Associate Business Member (ABM) Nominations:

As a benefit of membership, only Gold Associate Business Members of AHCA/NCAL (national office) may serve on committees.  For further information regarding the nomination of a vendor representative, please contact Sharon Purvis.

Current Committee Members: 

All 2020/2021 committee appointments will be for a two-year term.  Appointments are finalized by the AHCA Board of Governors Chair.  In order to keep committee sizes at optimal levels, applicants are likely to be assigned to just one committee.  Please visit the AHCA website for a list of committee descriptions.
